Notations whilst on the Lunar Surface! + Gene Cernan Provenance
This is the actual checklist page representing the first of three rest
periods on the Apollo 17 lunar landing mission. This page 3-7/3-8 is
from the Apollo 17 Lunar Surface Checklist (SKB32100123-363 S/N 1001)
and originates from the personal collection of the last man on the
Moon, Eugene Cernan. The Lunar Surface Checklist was one of the most
important and most utilized documents from the astronauts stay while on
the Moon's surface.
This particular page represents Cernan and Schmitt's first night of
sleep on the lunar surface (both pre-sleep and post-sleep procedures)
between EVA's 1 and 2. Page 3-7 details activities related to preparing
the LM for sleep. Page 3-8 was where the crew detailed their sleep
time, food consumption and logged any medication taken.
Measures 8" x 5.5". Buyer will receive a photo of Cernan holding the
page and a hand signed LOA attesting to the page's authenticity.
Those of you that have seen the Apollo 17 From the Earth to the Moon
episode may recall Gene's opinion of sleeping on the Moon. The LOA
from Cernan goes into greater detail about his strong opinion of flying
all the way to the Moon and sleeping almost a full day while there.
Essentially Cernan's post-flight interview and the LOA state that he
thought sleeping on the Moon was a complete waste of time, but he knew
that biologically, especially that first night after being awake for 20
hours, it was truly necessary.

This Transcript of voice transmissions between Houston and the Apollo
17 Lunar Module, shows the same information that has been written on
the checklist from that first night ie. that Cernan slept 6 pretty good
hours. Schmitt had 6 good but intermittent hours of sleep. Neither
crew member needed any medication.
