Original stamped 'First Day of Issue' envelope from the historic Mercury 7 flight when Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth. It was canceled at the Kennedy Space Center on the same day of his flight (February 20, 1962) at the time in which Glenn returned safely to Earth (3:30 pm).
This was the first commemorative stamp issued by the U.S. postal service to depict a manned spacecraft. With a perfect, mint signature, it is unframed and approximately 3 ¾ x 7 inches overall in size. Glenn is also the oldest human being to fly in space, at the age of 77, when he flew aboard the shuttle Discovery on mission STS-95 in October and November of 1998.
